For white collar jobs, the Blog, Resume, and linkedIn are becoming parts of the background check. The foot in the door is more and more, about a relationship that was built, before the Job was even posted. Which could have stared, through a contact made with, LinkedIn, your blog or even Twitter.

Call it a resume, CV (curriculum vitae), Linkedin summary, etc. the objective is to get noticed AND get to the next step which is an interview of some form. The more tools that are available to get you to that point the better. I believe in the power of AND, and what I believe is that multiple "avenues" or forms of generating awareness of one's skills, background, abilities, network, influence, etc. will be born and used. Good points all, but do not forget what is the ultimate goal here: employment in some form, and to get that an interview HAS to ensue.

You make some excellent points, John. I have a feeling that even if LinkedIn expands it's media offerings they'll never be able to catch up with an open source blog service like Wordpress. The number of plugins built by the Wordpress community is matchless. I think the only barrier to entry for executives is the perception that it takes a "geek" to start a blog, which is simply not true.

I agree with your assessment of LinkedIn. LinkedIn has created the network but lacks the advanced tools to link the network to media. Widgets won't protect LinkedIn from becoming irrelevant. Without a significant evolution in LinkedIn communication tools, it is bound to follow the path of other networks without advanced media (Network TV, AOL, etc.).

As the popularity of LinkedIn grows, its usefulness to recruiters diminishes. Recruiters need ways to differentiate candidates, and blogs, websites, Twitter have become the tools to narrow the field. Blogs are extremely flexible, highly regarded by search engines and personalized. LinkedIn needs a wider media offering to stay relevant.
